Pier 80 and Warm Water Cove
This 90-acre industrial site is located on San Francisco’s southeast waterfront and includes the last working cargo shipping pier in the city and its vital connection to the railway. However, due to anticipated sea-level rise, the waterfront has been transitioning to a more sustainable and resilient shoreline. The proposed redevelopment of the site as a regional public open space will serve the local community and connect to the shoreline trail system.

Concept
The design seeks to balance the city of San Francisco’s plan to keep the working cargo shipping pier and support the city’s resiliency efforts by proposing an eco-industrial open space for this site. The design will adapt to change over time to address the compounding effects of sea-level rise, tidal events, storm surges, and El Niño weather events. The design also prioritizes improving local ecology and shoreline habitat, including revenue generation and educational site programming, as well as preserving the site’s connection to the surrounding neighborhood communities.
