Western SOMA

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department seeks to acquire this 1/2-acre lot for a new park acquisition in the Western South of Market neighborhood of San Francisco. The dot-com boom in this neighborhood saw the conversion of warehouses and industrial spaces, which had previously been used as artist lofts, into tech start-up offices. Development and gentrification meant residential lofts and live/work units were built to accommodate the changing demographic. Current nearby users include local residents, office workers, mechanics, unhoused people, and partygoers.

Concept

This design addresses the severe lack of green space and chronic stress in urban areas by bringing the environment and its users into balance and reconnecting users to the patterns of the natural world. The design provides environmental education, health-inducing programming, and connections to local wildlife habitat corridors established by the San Francisco Planning Department’s Green Connections Network and Ecology Guides.
